COS Sports Notes: Week of April 13, 2026
College of the Sequoias' baseball and softball teams are playing at home this week, as the softball team tries to close in on a conference championship and the baseball team looks to solidify its playoff push.
Baseball
The Giants had a rare sweep of Merced last week in a three game series, to run their conference winning streak to nine games, longest in over 10 years.
Sequoias will host Taft Monday at 2 p.m. and Fresno Tuesday at the same time, and then Friday play at Reedley.
COS is 13-5 in conference play (second place) and 19-14 overall. Fresno leads the conference with a 17-1 record, the only loss to COS in an earlier series.
Softball
COS will host Taft Tuesday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader, and then play a single game at Coalinga Thursday.
The Giants are 25-7-1 overall and 11-2 in conference play, tied for first place with Fresno, with five games remaining.
In the latest state rankings, Sequoias continues to be ranked No. 5 in the state and No. 3 in Northern California.
Swimming & Diving
The Sequoias swim teams will compete in the conference meet beginning Thursday at Merced.
At the conference diving championships, COS turned in strong performances. Scott Dutcher captured the CVC title in both the 1-meter (179.15) and 3-meter (202.30) events, placing fourth and third in NorCal, respectively, to qualify for the state meet.
On the women's side, Reannon Herrera was also a double conference champion, winning the 1-meter (209.15) and 3-meter (200.25), placing fourth and fifth in NorCal to advance to state competition.
Tennis
The COS women beat San Francisco 6-3 in the first round of the NorCal team playoffs last week, and Tuesday will travel to face No. 2 seeded American River in a semifinal match.
Sequoias, 11-2 for the season, lost to American River in the NorCal finals last year. ARC is 12-2 this year.
The Giant men's team fell 9-0 to Foothill in its first round playoff match last week, to finish the year at 10-5.
Track & Field
The Giant track teams will compete in the Gary Shaw Last Chance meet Saturday at Hartnell College.
COS had several top placings at last weekend's Mt. San Antonio Relays meet. Outstanding among them were Vivian Moore, who captured first place in both the long jump and triple jump.
Sadie Carpenter was second in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump; Jizelle Loza third in the 3000 meter steeplechase; and the 4 x 400 relay team (Katalina Castillo, Abigal Cutshall, Allyson Daniel, Daoni Hodge-Redd) which was third.
For the men, Julian Valdivia was first in the 800 meters, Tevin Howerton second in the 200, Mattis Aguilar second in the high jump, Tyrik Jackson third in the long jump, and Reece Poscablo third in the 110 hurdles and sixth in the 400 hurdles. COS finished second in the 4 x 100 relay (Chase Dexeter, Tre-shawn Rimmer, Jo'siah Moon, Howerton) and the 4 x 400 relay (Richard Crakes, Moon, Poscablo, Jacob Estrada).
Earlier last week, Crakes placed fourth in the decathlon at the NorCal Multi championship meet, and Castillo was ninth in the heptathlon.
