COS Sports Notes: Week of September 29, 2025
Women's and men's soccer host back-to-back conference matchups, volleyball plays first home conference match, cross country heads south, and football surges into the state's top 12 after upset win over Butte.
A full Friday slate headlines another busy week for College of the Sequoias Athletics, with soccer and volleyball programs hosting key home contests while football continues to climb the rankings after a statement victory. Cross country also builds momentum heading into a road invitational in Pomona.
Soccer
A soccer doubleheader and the first home volleyball match in conference play are on tap for College of the Sequoias Friday.
The COS women's soccer team will host Taft Friday at noon at Sequoias Stadium in the first half of the doubleheader. Sequoias is 3-5-1 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
The Giant men's team will host Clovis Friday at 3 o'clock in its conference opener, and the second half of the doubleheader. Sequoias is 2-4-4 for the season.
Volleyball
The Giant volleyball team will host Taft Friday at 6 p.m. in the Porter Fieldhouse. They opened conference play Wednesday at Coalinga College.
After losing three of five matches last week, Sequoias is now 14-5 overall. Entering the week, the Giants are ranked 23rd in the state and ninth in Northern California.
Cross Country
The Giant cross country teams will compete in the Pomona Invitational meet Saturday at Pomona College.
In last week's Modesto invitational meet, the Giant women's team placed second out of six teams while the men finished fourth out of nine.
Arianna Ramirez-Romero was the top finisher for the COS women, placing fifth out of a field of 72 runners. Gia Ortega was 10th and Elizabeth Urquilla was 13th.
Julian Valdivia was the top men's place, ninth in a field of 108 runners. Ryan Herrera was 13th.
Football
The Giant football gets a well-earned bye this week, after its huge upset of Butte College Saturday. Butte was ranked No. 2 in the state and Northern California and had an eight-game winning streak.
Payton Faker's 4-yard touchdown run with 1:10 remaining, gave COS the 42-38 win.
Sequoias is now 4-1 entering Valley Conference play, which commences
October 11 when COS travels to Sacramento City College.
In this week's JC Athletic Bureau state rankings, the Giants moved up to No. 12 in the state and fifth in Northern California.
Next home game for COS will be October 18 when they host Monterey Peninsula, currently 5-0 and ranked No. 6 in the state.
