COS Sports Notes: Week of March 23, 2026
First place in the Central Valley Conference softball standings will be on the line Thursday, when College of the Sequoias hosts Fresno City College in a 2 o'clock single game.
COS, winners of six in a row, entered the week with a 7-1 CVC record, a half game behind FCC (8-1). The Giants are 21-6-1 overall, and played a doubleheader at Merced (4-3, 10-16) on Tuesday.
Sequoias moved up a notch in the latest state rankings, to No. 9 in the state and fifth in Northern California.
BASEBALL
The Giant baseball team appears to have finally hit their stride, with an unprecedented three-game sweep of Saddleback last week, the state's 26th ranked team.
Sequoias will step back into conference play this week with a three-game series against Porterville. Tuesday and Saturday games are at Porterville, and Thursday the Giants host at 2 p.m.
COS now has a six-game winning streak, its longest since 2021. The Giants are 13-12 overall and 7-5 in CVC play. Porterville is 1-8 in conference play and 8-17 for the year.
TRACK
Friday, most of the Giant track team will compete at Modesto in the Coast vs. Valley meet. Saturday, select athletes will be in the West Coast Relays at Buchanan High in Fresno.
At last week's Mark Canover Classic in San Luis Obispo, the Giant men finished third out of 14 teams, and second among community college teams. The women were fifth out of 13 teams.
Men's standouts were Tevin Howerton, who won the 100 and 200 meters; Richard Crakes, who won the 110 hurdles; Tyrik Johnson, who won the long jump; and the 4 x 100 relay team which placed first.
The women's 4 x 100 team finished third, for their best showing.
SWIMMING
The Giant swimmers have a few weeks off before the conference meet, but the divers will compete in Las Positas Hawk Invitational Friday and Saturday in Livermore.
Last week the Giant men and women both finished first in a three-way meet with Fresno and Clovis.
Women's standout was Ellie Lambert, who won the 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, 200 IM and was on two winning relay teams.
Men's standouts were Quinn Rea, who won the 500 freestyle and 200 IM; Trent Regier, who won the 50 and 100 butterfly; and Tanner Lopez, who won the 50 and 100 freestyle. All three were also on a winning relay team.
TENNIS
The COS women's tennis team needed a win at Porterville Tuesday to clinch a tie for the conference title.
Sequoias is 6-1 in conference play and 9-2 overall. The Sequoias men are 9-4 overall and 5-2 in CVC play.
Both the men and women will compete in the conference tournament Thursday through Saturday in Porterville.
