COS Sports Notes: Week of September 22, 2025
COS football hosts state No. 3 Butte, volleyball rides 8-match win streak into road-heavy week, and soccer and cross country continue competitive slates across California.
College of the Sequoias Athletics is surging into October with momentum across multiple fall sports. From a high-profile football matchup at Sequoias Stadium to volleyball's hottest stretch of the season and key action in soccer and cross country, the Giants are proving competitive on every front.
FOOTBALL
College of the Sequoias' football team faces its stiffest test of the season Saturday, when the Giants host powerful Butte College at 11 a.m. in Sequoias Stadium.
Butte is 4-0 and entered last week as the state's third-ranked team, and second in Northern California—and that was before handing Modesto, one of the top contenders in the Valley Conference, a 43-29 loss on their own field.
The Giants improved to 3-1 by defeating College of the Redwoods 41-21 in the schools' first-ever meeting. Sequoias entered last week ranked No. 16 in the state and seventh in NorCal, and is assured of moving up in the polls since Fresno and Modesto, ranked ahead of the Giants, both lost.
This will be COS' final non-conference game. Next week it will have a bye, and then open conference play at Sacramento in two weeks.
VOLLEYBALL
Sequoias is 12-2 overall and has won eight straight matches, and is poised for its busiest week of the season—all on the road.
Wednesday, COS will be at Victor Valley College to face Victor Valley and San Bernardino Valley. Friday, the Giants play at Monterey Peninsula and Saturday, will face Feather River and Hartnell in Salinas.
Sophomore libero Allison Wood was named one of the state Players of the Week, for her play last weekend helping the Giants win four matches.
Sequoias is currently ranked 16th in the state and No. 6 in Northern California.
SOCCER
The Giant women's soccer team has two conference matches this week, playing Tuesday at Merced and Friday at Reedley.
COS, 1-4-1 overall, lost its Central Valley Conference opener to Fresno 4-0 last Friday.
The Sequoias men, 2-3-3 for the year, have one match scheduled this week. Friday the Giants play at East LA College.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Giant cross country teams will have their second meet of the season Friday, competing in the MJC Invitational meet in Modesto.
