COS Sports Notes: Week of 9-2-25
College of the Sequoias is set for a full slate of fall sports action this weekend, with football returning home after a statement win, volleyball traveling to a high-level tournament, soccer teams continuing early-season play, and cross country launching its campaign under a new head coach.
FOOTBALL
College of the Sequoias' football team, fresh from an impressive season-opening win on the road, has its first home game Saturday.
The Giants will face perennially strong City College of San Francisco at 11 a.m. at Sequoias Stadium.
COS defeated American River 21-13 last week, with the Beavers coming into the game ranked No. 5 in the state pre-season poll. It was also the first Giant win over ARC in six games.
Sequoias, ranked 16th in the state and seventh in Northern California in the pre-season, is hoping for a repeat performance against the Rams, as the Giants won 27-24 last year in overtime.
CCSF, which lost its season opener to Santa Rosa 41-38 in overtime, is ranked 24th in the state and 10th in NorCal.
SOCCER
The Giant men's team will be at home Friday, hosting LA Mission College at Friday at 3 p.m. at Sequoias Stadium.
The men were 0-0-2 entering the week, with a night match at Canyons on Tuesday.
COS' women tied San Joaquin Delta 1-1 Tuesday in their only match of the week.
Sequoias is now 0-3-1.
VOLLEYBALL
Winners of three of four matches last week, the Giant volleyball team will travel to Stockton Friday for the Delta Classic. COS will face Sierra in its first and then the winner or loser of the Delta-Ohlone match at 3 p.m.
The tournament continues on Saturday with at least two more matches for Sequoias.
COS is currently ranked 21st in the state and No. 7 in Northern California. Host Delta is ranked No. 2 in the state and was 6-0 entering the week.
CROSS COUNTRY
Under new coach Arianna Perry, the COS cross country teams open their season Saturday by running in the Crush Invitational meet, at Clovis Community College.
