COS Sports Notes: Week of January 19, 2026
College of the Sequoias will host a basketball doubleheader Wednesday, while the softball opens its season at home Saturday.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Giant men's team had a good week, defeating Lemoore and Fresno City College, to improve to 4-0 in the conference—tied with Columbia—and 13-5 overall. Sequoias has now won 28 of its last 30 conference games.
COS hosts Merced Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Porter Fieldhouse and plays at Porterville Saturday at 3 o'clock.
Merced is 3-1 in conference play and 6-12 overall, while Porterville stands at 2-2 in conference play and 5-13 overall.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The COS women had a rough week, with losses to title contenders Lemoore and Fresno, and now stand at 2-2 in the conference and 9-11 overall.
They will host Merced (1-2 in conference, 8-11 overall) Wednesday at 7 p.m. and play at Porterville (0-4, 2-18) Saturday at 5 p.m.
Porterville is coached by former COS assistant Isaac Castro.
SOFTBALL
COS will open its 2026 season at home Saturday, hosting Modesto in a double header beginning at noon.
The Giants are coming off a 29-11 season and conference co-championship with Fresno.
Leading Sequoias will be Emilee Santos, Conference Player of the Year as a freshman; and returning all-conference choices Shelby Somavia and Madisyn Benedict.
TENNIS
The Giant tennis teams open their season Friday by competing in the West Valley College doubles tournament.
EQUESTRIAN
Sequoias will compete in the Cal Poly show Saturday and Sunday in San Luis Obispo.
BASEBALL
Under new coach Scott Laird, the Giants open their season Friday and Saturday with single games at Allan Hancock.
Sequoias will open its home season January 27 with a 2 p.m. game against Bakersfield.
Laird, a COS assistant for 13 seasons, replaces Jody Allen as head coach. Allen retired last spring after 32 seasons.
Sequoias is looking to improve on its 16-23 record from last year
