COS Sports Notes: Week of December 2, 2025
College of the Sequoias welcomes top programs from across the state for the prestigious Tom Gilcrest Invitational this week, while men's basketball keeps rolling and volleyball wraps up another successful postseason run.
The winter sports season is officially underway at College of the Sequoias, and this week all eyes turn to Porter Field House as the 48th annual Tom Gilcrest Invitational tips off Thursday with some of the top women's basketball programs in California converging on Visalia.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
College of the Sequoias' women's basketball team will host the 48th annual Tom Gilcrest Invitational tournament Thursday through Saturday at the Porter Field House.
Coach Tyler Newton's Giants, 3-4 overall after a loss to Sacramento Monday night, will host Los Angeles Valley Thursday in the 7 p.m. feature game.
Some of the state's top teams will be competing in the tournament, led by defending state champion Mt. San Antonio College (7-0), ranked No. 1 in the pre-season state poll. The Mounties will face San Joaquin Delta, 5-0 and ranked No. 4 in the pre-season poll, at 1 o'clock.
Sequoias defeated Mt. SAC twice last season, but fell to the Mounties 57-50 in the state semifinals, ending a 31-game COS winning streak.
Other first round games will feature No. 10 ranked Laney vs. No. 5 ranked Moorpark at 3 p.m., and Butte facing Chabot at 5.
Should COS win its first game, it will face the Butte-Chabot winner in the semifinals Friday at 7 p.m. The tournament final will be Saturday at 4 p.m.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
After losing its season opener to Fullerton, the Giant men have won six of their last seven games and stand at 6-2 overall.
COS defeated Victor Valley and Cerro Coso last weekend on the road.
Sequoias will not play this week, and will next see action Dec. 12-13 in the Coach Carr Classic in San Jose, named for the former San Jose City Coach and COS Hall of Fame member.
VOLLEYBALL
The Giant volleyball team defeated Hartnell 3-0 in the second round of the Northern California regionals last week, before falling to No. 2 seeded Taft in a regional final match.
Sequoias finished the season 24-10, with three of the losses to Taft.
