COS Sports Notes: Week of March 31, 2026
Baseball carries a nine-game win streak into a top-10 showdown, softball sits atop the conference, and track, swimming, and tennis continue postseason pushes for COS Athletics.
Baseball
College of the Sequoias' baseball team, playing its best ball of the season, has drawn a tough assignment this week.
COS, winners of nine in a row—its longest winning streak since 2020—and 16-12 overall, will travel this week for a three-game series at Santa Rosa, the seventh ranked team in the state and No. 3 in Northern California.
The Giants will play the Bear Cubs Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Santa Rosa is 21-7 overall and leading the Big 8 Conference. Sequoias has already equaled last season's victories, and its winning streak propelled it into the state rankings for the first time this year. COS is ranked 28th in the state and 14th in NorCal.
Sequoias is coming off a three-game sweep of Porterville last week.
The Giants will resume conference play next week against Merced, hosting the Blue Devils April 7 at 2 o'clock.
Softball
Sequoias took a giant step towards winning the conference championship last week by downing Fresno 6-2, its ninth win in a row.
COS, which does not play this week, is now 24-6-1 for the year and 10-1 in conference play, a half game ahead of Fresno (10-2) with seven to play.
Sequoias will next host Reedley in a double header on April 7.
COS' winning streak is its longest since 2024. The Giants are currently ranked No. 5 in the state and No. 3 in Northern California.
Track & Field
The Giant track teams will be in two meets this Friday and Saturday, with a few athletes at the Stanford Invitational and the rest of the squad at the Mike Fanelli Classic at San Francisco State.
In last week's West Coast Relays, Tevin Howerton placed fourth in the 200 meters and sixth in the 100; Richard Crates was fifth in the 400 hurdles; and John Applewhite fifth in the triple jump.
COS did well in the women's triple jump, as Vivian Moore placed fourth, Sadie Carpenter seventh and Ashlyn Reed eighth.
Swim & Dive
The Giant diving team will compete in the conference championships this Saturday, while the swimmers' championship meet is scheduled for April 16-18.
At last weekend's Hawk Invitational meet in Livermore, Sequoias standouts were Kenzie Hyder, first in the 1650 freestyle; Reannon Herrera, third in the 1-meter diving and fourth in the 3-meter; and Chandler Bruton, fifth in the 200 breaststroke and sixth in the 200 IM.
Women's & Men's Tennis
The COS tennis teams completed a successful regular season last week, and also excelled at the conference tournament held in Porterville.
The women's team qualified Sadie Avila, Jaden Godoy, Ruby Zambrano and Areli Tobon in singles for the state championships at Ojai in April. Avila reached the semifinals at the CVC tourney.
The doubles teams of Jylean Cervates-Mia Orosco, Godoy-Devony Allen, and Avila-Tobon also qualified for state.
For the men's team, Robert Dan and Ismael Navarro qualified for the state tourney in singles, plus the doubles teams of Christopher Rosales-Kenneth Catalan, and Dan-Seth Herrera.
Both COS teams will advance to the NorCal team playoffs which begin April 7. The Giant women clinched at least a tie for the championship with a 7-1 mark (10-2 overall), while the men were second in the conference (6-2) and 10-4 overall.
