Giants Close Regular Season with Sophomore Day Win, Secure Playoff Berth
VISALIA, Calif. – College of the Sequoias women's soccer finished the regular season on Friday afternoon, earning a 5-2 victory over Lemoore on Sophomore Day at Sequoias Stadium. The win capped an impressive late-season push and officially punched the Giants' ticket to the postseason as the No. 24 seed in the 3C2A Northern California Regional Playoffs.
With the result, the Giants improved to 10-8-3 overall and 9-5-2 in Central Valley Conference play, while Lemoore dropped to 6-13-3 and 4-9-3 in the CVC.
Lemoore struck first in the 15th minute to take an early lead, but the Giants responded with poise and composure. Sequoias equalized in the 24th minute when sophomore Melanie Navarro (Lindsay HS) finished a pass from freshman forward Jaya Laird (Hanford HS). Navarro struck again in the 39th minute—once again assisted by Laird—to put the Giants ahead heading into the closing moments of the half.
"We talked about staying calm and trusting our identity," said Head Coach Brooklyn Morris. "That response after going down showed a lot of maturity. Getting those goals before halftime completely shifted the momentum."
That momentum carried into the second half. In the 41st minute, Laird continued her standout performance by scoring to extend the lead, with midfielder Ariss Ramirez (Clovis West HS) providing the assist. Sequoias kept attacking relentlessly, and less than three minutes into the second frame, Ramirez added a goal of her own in the 48th minute off another connection with Laird.
Laird capped off her exceptional day in the 60th minute, scoring her second goal and sealing a three-assist, two-goal performance—one of the most productive outings of the season for any COS player.
The Giants again relied on strong goalkeeping from the tandem of sophomore Haylie Brasil (Manteca HS) and sophomore Madison Lujan (Hanford HS). Brasil recorded six saves in the first half, while Lujan added eight more in the second to help secure the win.
"I'm incredibly proud of our sophomores and the way the entire team competed today," Morris added. "They brought great energy, stayed disciplined, and earned the right to keep playing. We're excited for the postseason and the opportunity ahead of us."
The Giants outshot Lemoore 18-16 and controlled possession for large stretches of the match. The Giants also converted five of their 18 shots into goals during one of their strongest offensive performances of the year.
