College of the Sequoias Men’s Soccer Falls in Final Minute at Taft
TAFT, Calif. – The College of the Sequoias men's soccer team battled until the final whistle on the road Tuesday afternoon but suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Taft College after conceding the winning goal in the closing minute.
The Giants (2-7-5, 0-3-1 Central Valley Conference) played strong defensively through the opening half, keeping the match scoreless behind organized play from their back line and goalkeeper Angel Nieto (Lindsay HS).
Taft broke the deadlock early in the second half, going ahead 1-0 in the 55th minute. Sequoias continued to fight and found the equalizer late when Efren Herrera (Porterville HS) buried a shot in the 89th minute off an assist from Jose Roman Cortes (Lindsay HS) to make it 1-1.
However, the Cougars capitalized on a final chance just one minute later, netting the decisive goal in stoppage time to escape with the narrow victory.
"We showed a lot of heart and composure to tie the match late," said Head Coach Abraham Campos. "It's tough to lose late, but I'm proud of our resilience and how our guys competed."
