College of the Sequoias Men’s Soccer Rolls Past Monterey Peninsula, 4-0
MONTEREY, Calif. – The College of the Sequoias men's soccer team put together its most complete performance of the early season on Friday, September 19, earning a 4-0 road victory over Monterey Peninsula behind a balanced offensive attack and a clean sheet in goal.
With the win, the Giants improved to 2-3-3 overall, while the Lobos fell to 1-5-1.
COS wasted little time grabbing control of the match. In just the second minute, Joshua Urista Herrera (El Diamante HS) broke through for the opening goal, finishing off a setup from defender Gabriel De La Fuente (Lindsay HS). The early strike gave the Giants momentum, and they carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
The Giants turned that fast start into a commanding second half. Sophomore forward Jairo Medina (Dinuba HS) doubled the lead in the 65th minute after a well-placed assist from Adrian Casillas (Lindsay HS). Eleven minutes later, Efren Herrera (Porterville HS) extended the cushion to 3-0, taking a feed from Urista Herrera and slotting home. Defender Eliseo Vargas (Woodlake HS) capped the scoring in the 81st minute, again with Urista Herrera providing the assist—his second of the day to go along with his opening goal
In goal, Angel Nieto (Lindsay HS) was sharp, stopping all three shots on target from the Lobos to secure the shutout. The Giants limited Monterey Peninsula to just three shots on frame all match while generating 12 attempts of their own.
"We came out with the right mindset today and executed on both sides of the ball," said Head Coach Abraham Campos. "Joshua set the tone early, and the guys built on that energy all match. It was a complete team effort, and I'm proud of how we responded on the road."
The win marked the Giants' second shutout of the season and gave the Giants a needed boost heading into the final stretch of non-conference play.
