SANTA ROSA, Calif. – The College of the Sequoias baseball team faced a tough road test last week, falling in a three-game series at Santa Rosa. Despite showing flashes offensively, the Giants were unable to slow down a consistent Santa Rosa lineup across the series.
Game 1 – Santa Rosa 14, Sequoias 2 (April 1)
College of the Sequoias struck first in the opening inning as Aiden Medina (Hoover HS) scored on an RBI single from Joshua Barajas (Fresno HS) to give the Giants an early 1-0 lead. Santa Rosa answered immediately and then broke the game open with a six-run third inning, highlighted by a three-run home run.
Medina provided a bright spot for the Giants, launching a solo home run in the fifth inning for the team's second run. However, Santa Rosa continued to add on with multiple extra-base hits and home runs to pull away.
"We came out with some energy early," Head Coach Scott Laird said. "Against a team like that, you have to stay consistent through all 9 innings."
Game 2 – Santa Rosa 5, Sequoias 4 (April 2)
The Giants responded with a strong effort in game two, rallying late to briefly take the lead before Santa Rosa walked it off in the ninth.
Trailing 3-0 entering the seventh, Sequoias cut into the deficit on a two-RBI single from Walker Selley, scoring Medina and Adan Flores (Central East HS). In the eighth, Medina delivered again with a two-run double, scoring Flores and Payton Garcia (Fowler HS) to give the Giants a 4-3 lead.
Santa Rosa answered in the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back RBI singles to secure the 5-4 win.
"I liked how we competed and fought back," Laird said. "We put ourselves in a position to win, but we have to finish those games late."
Game 3 – Santa Rosa 9, Sequoias 0 (April 3)
Santa Rosa took control early with runs in each of the first three innings. The Giants pitching staff battled throughout, but the momentum stayed with the home team.
"We ran into a team that executed well all series," Laird said. "We have to regroup, clean some things up, and be ready to respond moving forward."
On Deck
The Giants will return home on Tuesday, April 7, hosting Merced at 2:00 p.m. as the Giants look to bounce back and get back on track in conference play.
