Giants women's basketball keeps rolling vs. Antelope Valley

College of the Sequoias women's basketball team extended its strong start to the coronavirus pandemic delayed and abbreviated season with a pair of blowout victories against Antelope Valley.

The Giants improved to 4-0 -- all four wins by double-digit margins -- as Celeste Lewis (Sierra Pacific-Hanford) delivered 17 points, three rebounds, five assists, five steals and a block during a 69-50 win over the Marauders (2-2) on March 13 in Lancaster.

Sequoias, among 18 women's basketball-playing community college's state-wide that elected to play in a month-long season, took control of the game with a 17-8 second-quarter surge, then put Antelope Valley away with a 23-12 fourth quarter.

Alana Roberts (Sierra Pacific) contributed 14 points, six rebounds, an assist and a block.

Sequoias also received nine points apiece from Neli Diaz (McFarland) and Ayon Carter (Oakland); seven points and three assists from Sapphire Jones (Hanford); five points, five rebounds and two steals from Nikola Hudson (England); four points and eight rebounds from Ella Thompson (Mammoth) and four points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals from Serena Ybarra (Coalinga).

Lewis and Roberts also led the way as the Giants raced past Antelope Valley 86-50 on March 12 at Porter Field House.

Lewis finished with 23 points, five rebounds, an assist, two steals and a block, while Roberts added 15 points, 10 rebounds and three assists.

The Giants broke the game open with a 32-point fourth quarter.

Sequoias shot 42.4 percent from 3-point range, including a 6 of 10 effort by Lewis.

A balanced attack also saw Jones (11 points, six rebounds, two blocks, an assist and a steal), Diaz (11 points along with three rebounds and two assists), and Carter (10 points, a rebound, two assists and four steals) all score in double figures.

Hudson (six points, seven rebounds, four assists and a steal), Thompson (six points, seven rebounds and an assist), Ybarra (four points, five rebounds, seven assists and a steal) and Atlanta native Kuda Ceesay (three blocks, two rebounds) also contributed for the Giants.

Sequoias returns to action March 19-20 against Allan Hancock (1-1).

The Giants travel to Santa Maria to face the Bulldogs at 3 p.m. March 19, then host the rematch against Allan Hancock at 3 p.m. March 20 at Porter Field House.
