Sequoias Men Win Team Title, Women Finish Second at CVC Meet
MERCED, Calif. – College of the Sequoias men's and women's track and field teams delivered dominant performances at the 2025 Central Valley Conference Championships, with the Giant men claiming the team title and the women earning a strong second-place finish.
COS athletes won a combined 23 event titles, scoring heavily across sprints, distance races, hurdles, jumps, throws, and relays. The men compiled 390 points to run away with the team championship, while the women totaled 196 points to finish second.
Women's Highlights
Makayla Jones (Corcoran HS) led the way, sweeping the 200 meters (24.71) and 400 meters (56.65) for individual titles. She was joined on the podium by Coryn Theus (Las Vegas) (3rd in 200, 5th in 400) and Lilianna Ramirez-Romero (Chowchilla HS) (3rd in 400).
The Giants picked up more podium finishes in distance events, with Dana Ruiz (Tulare Union HS) taking third in the 800 meters (2:26.85) and 10,000 meters (42:10.53), while Arianna Ramirez-Romero (Chowchilla HS) placed third in the 1500 meters (4:54.37) and fifth in the 800 meters.
In steeplechase, Jizelle Loza (Redwood HS) placed fifth (13:49.09) and Xitlallic Fierros (El Diamante HS) took seventh (15:13.40).
COS excelled in the field, highlighted by Ava King (Bakersfield Christian HS) winning the high jump (1.50m) and Micaela Fraley (Tulare Western HS) capturing the pole vault (2.80m) titles. Ashlyn Reed (Tulare Western HS) swept the long jump (5.33m) and triple jump (11.36m), while teammates Ava King (2nd in long jump) and Katalina Castillo (Corcoran HS) (3rd in long jump, 2nd in javelin) added key points.
The COS women's 4x100-meter relay team of Ashlyn Reed, Jones, Castillo, and Theus won in 48.93, and the 4x400 relay of Reed, Castillo, Lilianna Ramirez-Romero, and Jones finished second (4:13.91).
In the throws, Kassidy Pace (Redwood HS) led the way, placing second in the shot put (8.88m), third in discus (30.86m), and second in hammer throw (37.94m). Katalina Castillo (Corcoran HS) finished 2nd in javelin (27.71m), while Taylor McElree (Redwood HS) finished second in discus (31.59m).
Men's Highlights
On the men's side, Tevin Howerton (Las Vegas) continued his strong season, winning both the 100 meters (10.75) and 200 meters (21.46). Chase Dexter (Las Vegas) added a runner-up finish in the 100 (10.76) and a third in the 200 (21.91). Jeremiah West (El Diamante HS) (4th in 100, 4th in 200) and Jaden Mora (Clovis HS) (5th in 100, 6th in 200) were right behind.
Distance runners also shined as Julian Valdivia (Tulare Western HS) won the 800 meters (1:59.56) and 1500 meters (4:01.83). Levi Wagner (Mt. Whitney HS) was second in the 1500 meters (4:09.70) and won the 3000-meter steeplechase (10:43.13).
The hurdles were dominated by COS, with Rome Johnson (Corcoran HS) sweeping the 110 hurdles (15.07) and 400 hurdles (54.32). Teammates Melvin Reece (Las Vegas), Reece Poscablo (Honolulu), Michael Johnson III (Bullard HS), Tony Espinosa (Tulare Western HS), Richard Crakes II (Las Vegas), and Alejandro Barrera Gonzalez (Lemoore HS) also finished among the top eight in both hurdle events.
The 4x100-meter relay team of West, Dexter, Treshawn Rimmer (Las Vegas), and Howerton cruised to the title in 41.04. The 4x400-meter relay of Luis Limon (Mission Oak HS), Adam Garza Jr. (Redwood HS), Crakes, and Poscablo finished second (3:20.28).
In the field events, Levi Jimenez (Mission Oak HS) won the high jump (1.95m), and Shane Bagley (Lemoore HS) captured the pole vault (4.30m). Mekhi Sanchez (Lemoore HS) won the long jump (6.31m), while John Applewhite (Mt. Whitney HS) took first in the triple jump (12.23m).
COS throwers swept multiple podiums, with Phillip Snyder (Righetti HS) winning the shot put, while Ruben Rubio Carbajal finished second with 13.41m. Christian Alves (Selma HS) won the hammer throw title (40.49m), as Snyder finished second with 40.35m Tony Espinosa was able to take home the title in javelin (47.16m), with Carbajal finished second with 37.70m.
Next Up
College of the Sequoias heads to the NorCal Regional Championship Trials on Friday, May 2 at Butte College, with the Regional Finals to follow on Saturday, May 3. Top finishers will move on to the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) State Championships, scheduled for May 16-17 at College of San Mateo.
