Giants Compete with the Best at Cal, San Francisco State Meets
BERKELEY, Calif. – College of the Sequoias Track & Field competed against top-tier NCAA Division I, II, and California community college programs at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, hosted by the University of California, Berkeley from April 3–5. The meet featured over 30 programs including Cal, Fresno State, San José State, Nevada, Marquette, St. Mary's, and Cal State East Bay, giving the Giants valuable competition. Meanwhile, distance runners traveled to San Francisco State University for the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, which also ran April 3–5.
Men's Highlights
Tevin Howerton (Las Vegas) led the Giants' sprints, placing sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.76 and 13th in the 100 meters (10.78). He also ran on the 4x400-meter relay team, which placed seventh in 3:27.63, alongside Melvin Reece (Las Vegas), Rome Johnson (Corcoran HS), and Chase Dexter (Las Vegas). Dexter also placed 15th in the 200 meters (22.02).
In the hurdles, four Giants placed in the top 20 of the 110-meter hurdles. Reece led with an eighth-place finish in 15.19, followed by Johnson (9th, 15.30), Michael Johnson III (Bullard HS) (14th, 15.81), and Richard Crakes (Las Vegas) (18th, 16.18).
In the 400-meter hurdles, Crakes clocked a big PR of 54.72 for third place, with Johnson and Johnson III placing 18th and 19th (57.33 and 57.88).
Reyes Contreras Alvarez (Farmersville HS) added a strong sixth-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:23.28.
In the field, Isaiah Galaviz (Redwood HS) cleared 1.90m/6-2.75 for 10th in high jump, while Cristobal Vasquez (Tulare Western HS) was 16th (1.85m/6-0.75). Mekhi Sanchez (Lemoore HS) had a productive day, placing 12th in the long jump (6.47m/21-2.75) and 13th in the triple jump (13.02m/42-8.5).
Women's Highlights
Makayla Jones (Corcoran HS) finished 14th in the 100 meters (12.36) and 11th in the 200 meters (25.11). She also anchored the 4x100-meter relay team, which placed sixth in 48.93 alongside Ashlyn Reed (Tulare Western HS), Liset Castanon (Golden West HS), and Ejaiya Burton (Tulare Western HS).
Reed was the top field performer, finishing fourth in the triple jump with a personal-best 11.48m/37-8, which remains the No. 1 mark in California this season. She also placed 16th in the long jump (5.10m/16-8.75), while Ava King (Bakersfield Christian HS) finished 23rd (4.46m/14-7.5).
At the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, Jizelle Loza (Redwood HS) competed in two distance events, placing 17th in the 1-mile (5:55.23) and 16th in the 2-mile (13:20.12).
Next Up on the Track
The Giants continue their busy April slate this week. Multi-event athletes will compete at the NorCal Regional Multi Championships on April 8–9, followed by team entries in the JUCO division of the Mt. SAC Relays on April 12. These meets offer valuable opportunities to secure qualifying marks ahead of the championship phase of the season.
