Giants Men's Tennis Battle Through CVC Tournament, Earn State Bids
PORTERVILLE, Calif. – College of the Sequoias men's tennis team competed in the Central Valley Conference (CVC) Tournament, with multiple athletes advancing through singles and doubles draws to qualify for the 3C2A Individual State Championships in Ojai, which begins late April.
The three-day tournament featured individual bracket play, with COS players competing across both singles and doubles against top competition from across the conference.
Men's Singles & Doubles Recap
Robert Dan (El Diamante HS) led the way in singles, advancing to the semifinals with a series of strong performances. Dan opened with a win over Reedley's Salinas (6-0, 6-0), followed by a comeback victory over Reyes (Fresno), 6-7, 6-2, 6-0, before defeating Clovis' Nishimine (6-4, 6-2). His run ended in the semifinals against Fresno's McBride (6-2, 6-0).
Tomas Mendez (Mt. Whitney HS) also picked up a win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Rojas (Porterville), while Ismael Navarro (Tulare Western HS) earned a win over Reedley's Denver (6-0, 6-3) before falling in the next round.
In doubles, the team of Christopher Rosales (Mt. Whitney HS) and Kenneth Catalan (Lemoore HS) advanced with wins over Porterville's Vankham/Campos (6-0, 6-4) and Clovis' Nishimine/Sahakian (6-1, 6-1) before falling to Fresno's McBride/Madding 6-3, 6-1. The duo of Dan and Seth Herrera (Mt. Whitney HS) also made a run, defeating Reedley's Guillen/Salazar (6-2, 6-0) and Fresno's Reyes/Wiehl (6-2, 7-5) before falling to Clovis' Jett/Villarreal (2-6, 6-4, 6-1).
"Our coaches were proud of how our men competed throughout the tournament," said head coach Martin Herrera. "We saw strong effort and improvement, especially in doubles play and in how we handled tough matches."
Looking Ahead to Postseason Play
With their performances, several COS players secured qualification for the 3C2A Individual State Championships in Ojai.
On the men's side, Dan and Navarro qualified in singles, while the doubles teams of Dan/Herrera and Rosales/Catalan earned bids to the state tournament.
The Giants now await playoff seeding for the 3C2A Team Championships, which begin Tuesday, April 7. The 3C2A Individual State Championships in Ojai are scheduled to begin Thursday, April 23.
