Giants Go 2-0 at Ohlone, Set Sights on Road Trip
The College of the Sequoias women's volleyball team hit their stride over the weekend, earning back-to-back sweeps over Sacramento City and Ohlone on Saturday, September 20, improving their record to 12-2. The Giants showed balance, resilience, and depth across both matches — setting the tone for a critical stretch of non-conference play ahead.
Sequoias 3, Sacramento City 2
Sequoias opened the day with a 25-16, 22-25, 25-9, 25-21, 15-13 thriller victory over Sacramento City. Sophomore Ai-Lani Hunter (Central East HS) paced the offense with 17 kills with a .467 hitting percentage, while Mariainez Lopez (Dinuba HS) adding 16 kills, Trinity Tavita (Las Vegas) adding 12 kills, and Faizia Mamea (Las Vegas) added 6 kills. Molly Forehan (Melbourne) directed the attack with 27 assists, and Allison Wood (Immanuel HS) anchored the defense with 32 digs.
The Giants took advantage of 30 Sac City attack errors and showcased crisp passing and consistent execution across the board.
Sequoias 3, Ohlone 0
The Giants followed up with a hard-fought sweep over Ohlone, edging out a close first set and taking control from there to win 28-26, 25-21, 25-20.
Hunter once again led the way with 9 kills, and Lopez contributed 4 kills and 12 digs. Wood delivered another standout performance with 22 digs, while setters Forehan and Natalie Rankin (Porterville HS) combined for 30 assists.
"I was proud of how we stayed focused through both matches," said Head Coach Kim Rix. "We played with great energy, and our passing was solid. These were important wins for us as we head into a big week."
Upcoming Matches
The Giants now turn their attention to a busy four-day road swing featuring five matches across three locations. On Wednesday, Sept. 24, they'll travel to Victor Valley College for a doubleheader, taking on Victor Valley at 2:30 p.m. followed by San Bernardino Valley at 5:30 p.m. The road trip continues Friday, Sept. 26, with a 5:30 p.m. matchup at Monterey Peninsula College. The Giants will then wrap up the weekend on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Hartnell College, where they'll face Feather River at 12:00 p.m. and Hartnell at 2:00 p.m. The Giants will look to build on their 2-0 weekend and continue growing as a group during this important non-conference stretch.
