Sequoias Split Doubleheader with Reedley, Bounce Back in Run-Rule Win
VISALIA, Calif. – The College of the Sequoias softball team (25-7-1, 11-2 CVC) split a Central Valley Conference doubleheader with Reedley College on Tuesday, falling 6-5 in extra innings in the opener before responding with a 10-2 run-rule victory in Game 2.
Game 1: Reedley 6, Sequoias 5 (8 innings)
Reedley jumped out early, scoring one run in the first and adding three more in the second to take a 4-0 lead.
College of the Sequoias chipped away in the third when Madisyn Benedict (Hanford HS) brought in a run on a groundout to make it 4-1. The Giants then delivered their biggest inning in the fifth, scoring four runs to take a 5-4 lead.
Benedict sparked the rally with an RBI double, followed by an RBI groundout from Yarelli Rocha (Arvin HS). Shelby Somavia (Redwood HS) tied the game with an RBI double, and Alivea Salcedo (Tulare Western HS) drew a bases-loaded walk to give COS its first lead of the game.
Reedley answered in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5, and after a scoreless seventh, pushed across the go-ahead run in the eighth. The Giants were unable to respond in the bottom half.
Somavia led the offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Benedict added two RBIs.
Game 2: Sequoias 10, Reedley 2 (5 innings)
The Giants responded in a big way in the second game, using a balanced offensive attack and clean defense to secure a run-rule victory.
After Reedley scored in the first, Sequoias answered immediately when Emilee Santos (Corcoran HS) came around to score on an error to tie the game 1-1.
COS took control in the third inning as Rocha delivered a two-run single to put the Giants ahead 3-1. Reedley briefly cut into the lead in the fourth, but Sequoias responded with a four-run inning highlighted by a two-RBI single from Gabrielle Vasquez (Redwood HS) to extend the lead to 7-2.
The Giants put the game away in the fifth, adding three more runs. Mikayla Moreno (El Diamante HS) drove in a run, Anahi Heredia (Parlier HS) drew a bases-loaded walk, and Santos reached on a fielder's choice that brought in another run to make it 10-2.
Rashelle VerSteeg (Mt. Whitney HS) earned the win in the circle, allowing just three hits and two runs over five innings.
Sequoias totaled 10 hits in the game, with Rocha (3-for-3, 2 RBIs), Vasquez (2-for-3, 2 RBIs), and Santos (2-for-4, 2 runs) leading the offensive effort.

College of the Sequoias continues Central Valley Conference play next week as the Giants look to stay atop of the standings. They will host Taft College for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 14 at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
